Listening Marathon
I stayed up last night a little longer to make Christmas postcards for some people and then continued this morning. While writing to one of my contacts, I discovered a musician who sang on my album in the mid-2000s (which has been recently made non-explicit by the way), has two new releases out from the past two years. They are quite charming and different, however some familiar country bar feelings that one might really like around the holidays. Everything/Nothing from 2024 and Three Songs and Goodbye from 2025 by J.J. von Briesen. My favorites right now are probably “I Broke My Heart” and “Strange To Think”. There are a few production things I question on Everything/Nothing like the reverb choice and separation from the band on several tracks as well as the cover being totally obliterated in brightness, however the songs are really good and so is the backup. I can definitely hear these in a saloon in Texas or something. The cover for Three Songs and Goodbye is really cute and contrastingly serious at times with some subtle sense of humor. Her voice has aged with dynamics that can really sneak up on you while the accompanying vibrato is never overdone. The two albums are available on Tidal, which I recently subscribed to in order to catch up on some listening. I linked the YouTube playlists and I’m pretty sure you can search for them on other services as well.
